Christian Living: Let Others See Jesus in You

You may be one of the many who grew up in a church where one of the favorite hymns was “Let Others See Jesus in You.” You sang it so many times you might have felt like screaming if you heard it one more time. Yet looking back from today’s perspective, we see in the simple words of this old favorite a very clear message as to what Jesus expects us to do every day of our lives.

As we mature as believers we tend to forget the simple message that Jesus so often told the people during His ministry here on earth. He used the little child as an example of the kind of child-like faith we need in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. He used a woman sitting at His feet listening to His teaching—calling it “the most needful thing”—to illustrate the point that true worship is more beneficial than busy work. He responded to the confession of the thief on the cross with the words, “Today, you will be with Me in paradise.”

There’s nothing complex about any of Jesus’ teachings. Yet somehow Christians—just like the Jews of long ago—have added so much more to His simple truth. Unfortunately, this tends to confuse believers as to what Jesus wants from us as believers. In a few incidences the real truth is completely lost.

The chorus of the hymn “Let Others See Jesus in You” sums up the teaching of Jesus in very simple, straight-forward words:

“Let others see Jesus in you.
“Let others see Jesus in you.
“Keep telling the story, be faithful and true.
“Let others see Jesus in you.”

It’s the defining point for the Christian: when he lives his life in such a way that others see Jesus in him; when he constantly tells those around him the Gospel story; when he remains faithful and true to the One and only God.

Why wouldn’t any believer want to sing these precious words again and again? Jesus kept the assignment simple: this is what we do when we follow Him. We must never forget the message of our mission: once we come to know Christ, we must “let others see Jesus in us.” This is to be our life-style—until the day He calls us home.

  1. THE WORDS OF THIS SONG REALLY REGISTER WITH ME BECAUSE WHEN OTHERS SEE CHRIST IN US IT CAN MAKE THEM WANT TO BE LIKE US AS WE STRIVE TO BE MORE LIKE JESUS.

  2. Wanda says:

As I prayed this morning I asked God to speak to me and let me know what I am to do. I really prayed and asked to hear Him. This song immediately came to me. Not a coincidence – this is His way of speaking to me. Now I need to follow Him.

  3. Wanda, you are blessed to have such insight into God’s will for you. If only all believers could live by the principle of letting others see Jesus in them. You have heard Jesus correctly and I will pray with Him that you have the strength to follow Him. God bless all your efforts to that regard.
