Christian Living: Apply a Generous Covering of Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16

The key word in this verse is “richly.” When used in the context of Colossians 3:16, the definition of richly is simple: in abundance or abundantly. Little explanation is needed for us to understand what God is saying. Abundance implies excess, without limits. We are to have the word of Christ dwelling in us abundantly.

Without it, the rest of the verse would have no meaning.

In one sense, the Word does dwell richly in us the very moment we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior—because He is the Word! But here in Colossians, God is telling us that the written Word also must be as present in our lives as the air we breathe and the food we eat. We cannot afford to be miserly about our eating and breathing as this would greatly impact our quality of life. In like manner, we cannot afford to be stingy when it comes to spending time in the Word of God.

Only when the word of Christ richly dwells in us can we then experience the rest of the Colossians 3:16. The wisdom that is needed for teaching will be there. We will know where to find the words we need with which to admonish one another. We will sing with thankfulness in our hearts. It can happen no other way. That is the promise of Colossians 3:26.

Unleash your full potential. Don’t limit the quality of your life by letting others feed you a little of the Word every now and then. Saturate yourself with God’s Word. Take it in everyday in abundance and experience the fullness of Christ dwelling richly in you!
