Christian Living: A Man Called Jesus

And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9: 6b)

These are significant times in the history of our country. As Solomon often said in the book of Ecclesiastes, “There is nothing new under the sun.” We must remember to look back. Throughout history we see what happens when a nation starts following the ways of man, instead of the ways of God. This is exactly where our nation finds itself today.

The first nation to know God and then turn its back on Him was none other than Israel. The people wanted to be like the other nations of the world and demanded God give them a king. Because God was their King, they didn’t need another; but nevertheless, God gave them what they asked for. Their foolish desires led to a division within the kingdom and eventually exile for both Israel and Judah.

The problem with Israel was they took their eyes off God and starting looking to man to take care of them. Time and time again God invited them to repent and turn back to Him, but they refused. They rebelled, worshiped other gods and did detestable things in His sight. Eventually, God had no choice but to judge them for their sin and they suffered the consequences of rejecting Him.

Our nation is in the same mess today as Israel was back then. And just like then, we cannot rely on the government or mortal man to fix our problems. We must first turn back to God and repent of our sins, just as God demanded of His people in Biblical days. If we repent, God will work through godly men and godly governments to lead our nation in the way it should go.

The truth of the matter is that, in today’s flawed and sinful world, no man can be trusted to lead a people in perfect harmony. The day will come, however when one Man will do just that. We will be able to trust Him and rely on Him to take care of us. He will speak only the truth because He is Truth. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace.”

That Man is Jesus.
